Artist statement: Portrait Art series
As an artist I work hard to develop paintings that focus on female form while still maintaining a rough urban / street feel. My aim is to push this combination as far as possible without losing the essence and emotional connection with the portrait image.
The process of this series involves collecting images, reworking them to a base layer and figuring out what colours and textures will best compliment them. Once decided, I start by repeatedly building layers of colour on canvas with the use of knives, brushes, texture pastes, paints and aerosol cans. I normally repeat this process several times. I then take the female image and manipulate it on computer to a flat single colour scheme, and transfer the portrait image from the A4 paper print out, to the larger canvas. I will, on occasion, use stencil work on larger pieces to aid in proportion layout and add affect to the piece.
My current series is a follow on from the previous series in terms of style but incorporates new techniques and displays artistic growth on the subject matter. I try and mark the pieces in such a way that allows the viewer to see new marks and complex lines each time they are viewed.
